An Energy Company has forged a great relationship with Great Yarmouth College to secure the best motivated and skilled young engineers for its future workforce.
Managers at PSL Energy Services want to invest in engineering students to give them the most relevent and up-to-date skills to inject new blood into the energy industry.
Tutors will select the most talented candidates and the best two will be offered contracts by the Great Yarmouth firm, to be trained into first class engineers.
To seal the alliance, PSL has set up an Annual College Award - the PSL Young Engineer of the Year Prize - to encourgae acheivement and aspirations amongst young students.
The first winners of the award were Daniel Goodrum and Shani Ferguson, who were presented with vouchers of £150 and £100 to buy tools. They have just completed the one year Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) programme.
Paul Oliver, PSL quality, health and safety, environmental engineer, said that working with the college was a great way to recruit. "We must invest in new people who see engineering as a satisfying and worthwhile career. The average age of those working in the Oil and Gas industry at the moment is 45-plus and with a world wide skills shortage, it is imperative that we attract new blood. "College students are adapatable, eager to learn and can be quickly trained on emerging technologies. We can use the basic skills set they have learned at college to mould them into the next generation of PSL Engineers. Hopefully other companies will follow our lead and build links with the college to ensure the oil and gas industry is recruiting a workforce fit for the future."
Daniel and Shani, who are both 17, joined the full-time PEO course after GCSEs. Daniel secured a job as a production engineer with Placepower, in Gorleston, while Shani, the only girl on the course, starts a two year BTEC national diploma in engineering in the college in September.
